Public education in the U.S. is going through a crisis: Here in California the controversial High School Exit exam has been accused of disadvantaging females and minorities. Dr. Beth Yeager, director of the Center for Literacy & Inquiry in Networking Communities at UC Santa Barbara and Stephanie Couch director of the K-20 California Educational Technology Collaborative were in the studio with us on March 8, 2010 to record this interview which aired this morning. 2010 water conservation PSA by Digital Voyage: “Psycho”

This is my class’ second year entering the Santa Barbara County High School Video Contest. Students are asked to create a water conservation awareness PSA for broadcast. This is the 2010 entry entitled “Psycho About Water Conservation”

Radio show: UCSB online security group foils criminal network

Dr. Giovanni Vigna, one of the UC Santa Barbara researchers who recently took down one of the largest online criminal networks talked with Tim and me on the radio this morning.  He explained how he and the UCSB Computer Security Group foiled the Torpig Botnet which had nearly 200,000 zombie computers trolling for banks account numbers, passwords and personal data.  Hear the conversation on this week’s podcast.

Radio show: UCSB team discovers likely kidney disease drug

Twelve million people worldwide suffer from autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease or ADPKD.  Here in  the U.S. the number is larger than those affected by Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia combined. Dr. Thomas Weimbs, associate professor and director of the Weimbs Lab at UC Santa Barbara talked with us this morning to discuss a potential drug treatment that he and his team are working on.  Listen to the podcast.
