During my class’s break today at The Anacapa School the students walked out to find a giant tour bus in front of the school with a likeness of Aerosmith’s Joe Perry on the side. Perry emerged from Our Daily Bread bakery across the street, jaywalked (which is against school rules, ha) to campus and signed autographs for each and every student. Fortunately for him it is a small school.

From UC Santa Barbara’s Chancellor Yang regarding a confirmed case of H1N1 Swine Flu in Isla Vista / Goleta, Calif.

TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Dear Colleagues and Students:
Our campus health officials and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department have reported a confirmed case of H1N1 flu in the County. One of our students, an Isla Vista resident, has been treated for a mild case of H1N1 flu, and has fully recovered. Another student is being tested for a possible case of H1N1 flu; this student also had a very mild case, has been treated, and has fully recovered.
No other people in contact with either of these students, including their roommates, have come down with an influenza-like illness. The County Public Health Department has stated that these cases do not alter the current recommendations of the California Department of Public Health or Centers for Disease Control. In general, people are encouraged to respond to H1N1 with the same degree of caution as during normal flu season: wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; and stay home when you are sick. These recommendations and further information about H1N1 are posted at the Public Health Department website, at http://www.sbcphd.org, and at our Student Health Service website, at http://studenthealthsa.ucsb.edu.
We encourage anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to consult with their health care provider. Students who have questions or concerns should contact our Student Health Service at 893-5361. Dr. Elizabeth Downing, Campus Physician and Student Health Service Director, is the primary point of contact for information about our campus response to H1N1 flu; she can be reached at 893-2251 or via e-mail at downing-e@sa.ucsb.edu
The health and well-being of our campus community is our highest priority. We are glad that the current case, or possibly two cases, were identified and treated quickly, and that the students have fully recovered. We will continue to monitor this closely, and to keep our campus community informed.
At our spring debate conference student talent show my high school student Joshua shared his unique technique on the guitar. The crowd loved it! He really takes off at 1 min 30 sec.
We hear about the digital divide, but there is also a more social aspect holding some users back. While I don’t have actual recorded data to back up this hypothesis I would like to posit the idea that there is a “privacy divide” which is a cultural divide more closely linked to age and the associated attitudes toward privacy. Just as in the movie “Pleasantville” life turned from black and white to color as a garden-of-eden-like self-awareness descended upon the 1960s I propose that there has been a similar opening up of ones private life with the dawn of the electronic social network. These open attitudes are embraced particularly by college undergraduates and younger students but has also affected social networking users of all ages to some extent. If we, as developers of new educational communications technologies, can understand what exactly the needs and preferences are of this new group I believe we are a step closer to better serving them by designing systems that enable learning by working within this.
Oracle has made a commitment to buy Sun Microsystems, a leader in open source software development and support OpenOffice.org is theirs as well as MySQL, the leading open source database platform. Oracle is the leader in database software and the third largest software company behind MS and IBM, Apple is a mere #32 and local Citrix is #26. http://www.softwaretop100.org/
What might this mean for higher education? Sun is a very strong supporter of higher-ed. Will they make a greater or lesser commitment to ed and open source as Oracle? It remains to be seen.
Had to swap out my iPhone for a warranty replacement. #iCloud lost all my data even though I confirmed before that it had backed up today! [read tweet]2012/05/17
